He’s a science head and studying biotech at his high school but it’s important for him to see that nothing happens in a vaccum and that community involvement is always necessary, no matter what field you decide to go into! Stop Deed Theft Week is off to a great start!! Today, we gathered community members at Riverside Church to launch a week of engagement and awareness building around this insidious and pervasive issue known as Deed Theft. Together, we’re building a movement to protect working class homeowners and ultimately, make sure no family loses their home to fraud or predatory practices. Always good to be in rooms where people are thinking seriously about how to make democracy more participatory, inclusive, and accessible. It was great catching up with some familiar faces from CB9, CB14, CB15, CB11 and joining a thoughtful conversation about how we can make Community Boards more engaging, more effective, and more reflective of the neighborhoods they serve! Throwing it back to the time I spoke at Antonio Delgado’s campaign kickoff here in Brooklyn! One thing that has stayed with me was his message about the power of service. While we work to hold our officials accountable, we must also be good neighbors and continue showing up for one another. My time with AmeriCorps reinforced that lesson. Service isn’t just something we ask of government; it’s something we practice in our communities every day. That’s why I’m starting something new. Each week, I’ll spotlight at least one volunteer opportunity in AD57 and the surrounding neighborhoods so more of us can get involved, build stronger neighborhoods, and make a difference together.
